Project Type: Junior Studio
Date: December 2024
Project Brief:

Tasked to design a houseware for the GIA Home and Housewares Competition, we had to research, develop, and render a concept for a houseware useful for the general consumer. The concept had to be fully thought out and ready to manufacture.
Bloombox is an all-in-one aerobic composting solution. It can compost any plant waste and turn that waste into nutrient-rich soil for a houseplant or small garden. Its built-in planter beds also allow a by-product of compost, compost tea, to run into the plants, keeping them even stronger.
Research
According to the USDA, the United States throws away over 66 million tons of food annually. Roughly 60% of that waste is inedible but is viable compost.

Composting is a viable solution to part of this problem. It can use these inedible materials and turn them into nutrients for new plants, whether in a small farm or just a potted plant in someone’s home.

Nearly 40% of Americans rent their home, with few compost options that are renter-friendly, cost-effective, and space-efficient. Compost is currently not an option.
